Recently diagnosed with type 1 or 2 diabetes and do not know what to do? Here is a list of things you might want to keep in mind when you prepare meals, go to restaurants, or when you’re at the super market.

  • When preparing chicken, take off the skin before or after the process.
  • Try to avoid or cut back on minced or ground meat or beef, instead choose leaner cuts, ones with less fat. If there is any fat on the meat, cut it off before cooking.
  • Try to always buy low-fat, reduced-fat, or skimmed cheeses, and limit yourself to skimmed milk and yogurt.
  • Substitute butter for soft margarine (not stick) when possible.
  • Use cooking methods that will reduce the amount of fat in a recipe or food, such as grilling. Decrease the amounts of fat you normally use to cook a recipe. Marinate foods in lemon, vinegars, spices, and seasonings for rich flavors without the thick, creamy sauces.
  • Eat more whole grains and whole grain foods. Substitute your breads, pastas, and rice for whole grain products.
  • Increase your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Make sure you are getting enough water during the day.
